Clayton sets 2027 deadline for fire sprinkler installation

CLAYTON, Mo. — The city of Clayton is under a mandate to equip every commercial high-rise building with a fire sprinkler system by 2027, officials announced. Failure to meet this requirement could result in the city facing fines of $1,000 per day.

This move is part of a broader safety initiative aimed at enhancing fire protection in the city’s towering buildings. The announcement comes as St. Louis County Executive Sam Page prepares to meet today to deliberate on the deadline and the associated efforts, including the renovation of the Roos administration building.

Results: April 2 Missouri Municipal Election

The cost of renovating the existing administration building is pegged at $175 million and leasing a facility would cost Clayton approximately $340 million. However, building a new public safety and administration building is estimated at $562 million.

The discussions from today and their wider implications for the city’s budget and safety priorities will probably have an impact on the decision regarding how to proceed.
