Casey Schroeder is a walking billboard for his business, Clean Eatz.

A former college and professional baseball player, standing at 6 feet, 1 inch tall and weighing 210 pounds, Schroeder tells people his diet has much to do with his robust physique.

"I eat here everyday," he said of Clean Eatz, which recently was opened at 5673 N. Hamilton Road in northeast Columbus, west of New Albany and north of Gahanna.

"The meals are good," he said. "They sell themselves."

The latest Clean Eatz, the third in central Ohio, offers protein-rich, low-carb meals that are made on premises daily for dine-in or carryout customers.

The meal-plan menu is updated weekly. The most popular option, for example, is 10 meals for roughly $70. The frozen meals heat well in the microwave, he said.

A grab-and-go section of frozen meals is full of new and classic meals throughout the year. They include Nashville chicken mac and cheese using whole-wheat pasta, barbecue cheeseburger bowl and the "Arnold" – shredded steak, brown rice, mozzarella, green peppers, mushrooms and buffalo sauce.

Except for pizzas, which are 700 calories, individual dishes are 500 or fewer and quite appetizing, he said.

"I've got some big men who never complain, and I have three who have lost 100 pounds each," Schroeder said.

Schroeder was a catcher for Coastal Carolina University and moved up to the Birmingham Barons, the Double-A affiliate of the Chicago White Sox.

Clean Eatz may even customize meal plans for customers with special diets, such as vegetarians and vegans.

Diners who order at the counter may choose from a wide assortment of meals, such as burgers (turkey, salmon, black bean and bison), fresh salads, wraps and bowls.

Schroeder said he chose the North Hamilton Road location because of its proximity to businesses with a large employee base, including the Ohio State University Outpatient Care New Albany, OhioHealth New Albany Medical Campus and Big Lots corporate headquarters, plus a number of gyms and hotels.

He said he's looking at future locations in Pickerington and Grove City but doesn't have any specific growth plans.

Schroeder said the convenience of Clean Eatz makes it an attractive restaurant alternative.

"People are busy," he said. "It's a busy world. People are looking for healthy and something easy."

Angela Douglas, executive director of the Philip Heit Center for Healthy New Albany, said Schroeder introduced himself to staff and brought over catered meals.

"We've had quite a bit of his food, and it's really great," Douglas said.
