Believe it or not, the machine in your kitchen that you rely on to wash your dishes needs to be cleaned, too. According to TODAY, grease, soap scum, and food builds up in dishwashers, which creates a breeding ground for germs and also keeps the machine from running efficiently. Bob Vila, a house-maintenance expert, told the outlet that you should be cleaning your dishwasher's filter and drain once a month.

First, you need to remove the bottom dish rack. Look at the dishwasher drain to see if there's anything caught in it. Once you remove any build-up that's there, drainage in your washing machine will improve. This not only makes your dishwasher more efficient, but also prevents damage.

Pour a cup of white vinegar in a dishwasher-safe container, and then place it on the upper rack of your empty dishwasher. Then, run a hot-water cycle, which will help wash away grease and grime in the machine. This step will remove musty odors, too.

You'll need baking soda for the final step. Sprinkle one cup across the bottom of the dishwasher, and then run one more short hot-water cycle. Afterwards, your dishwasher will smell fresh and look nice and clean.
