Cleanup of 2,400-gallon oil spill from truck rollover is underway, Brewster authorities say

BREWSTER — Cleanup of a 2,400-gallon fuel spill from an overturned fuel truck on Route 137 on June 24 is underway, according to the Brewster Fire Department.

On June 24 at 7:38 p.m., the fire department responded to reports of an overturned oil truck near Twinturn Drive, said Fire Chief Robert Moran.

Rescue crews freed the driver and took him to Cape Cod Hospital.

Police from Brewster and Harwich responded, along with units from the Providence Canteen and the state hazardous materials team.

Plumbing units stayed on-site until approximately 3:30 a.m., Moran said, and were able to vacuum about 950 gallons of the spilled oil. Crews still need to tackle the rest of the fuel that leaked onto the road and into the ground.

Cleanup includes removing and replacing contaminated soil, Moran said, as well as taking samples of surrounding soil and catch basins.

The cleanup crews have been at work since June 24, he said, but will pause their efforts until Wednesday due to traffic concerns for the busy Fourth of July weekend.

"It's hard to say how long the cleanup process will take," Moran said. "The potential for resurfacing the road to the yellow line might even be talked about, so I can't say."

According to Brewster Police Chief Heath Eldredge, the department is working with the Massachusetts State Police Truck Team to investigate the cause of the crash. No charges have been filed, but the case is under investigation.
