Boys golf: Clear Fork places second at Tyger Invitational

The Clear Fork boys golf team put together a well-rounded day at Twin Lake Golf Course in Mansfield Wednesday with a second-place finish at the Tyger Invitational.

The 18-hole tournament also featured schools Madison, Mount Vernon, Crestview, New Philadelphia, Mapleton, Mansfield Senior and Marion Harding.

New Philadelphia placed first with a score of 329, while runner-up Clear Fork shot 345.

"We got a lot of young guys. We tell them what to do and they just go out and do it. They don't ask any questions," said Clear Fork coach Jeremy Riddle, whose team featured Nate Lind, Tanner Thorne, Grant Keep, Landon Ball, Clinton Stallard and Brayar Ousley. "An example would be maybe a ball that a lot of kids would chip, we're putting. We're hitting it with the flathead and trying to cut down on some of the mistakes.

"They're a really coachable young group that's been very impressive so far this year."

Madison finished third, shooting 347, and Mount Vernon fourth with a 353. Crestview placed fifth with 355, followed by Mapleton (357), Marion Harding (363) and Mansfield Senior (375).

Jacob Beaschler of Marion Harding was the medalist with a 71, followed by Nathan Menapace of New Philadelphia with a 75 and Clear Fork's Lind with a 77.

"Today, I was on with my putting. I made putts when I needed to," said Lind. "My irons were working for me real well. This is my first time being under 80, so that was big. I was happy with my performance.

"For the team, we always set a reasonable goal going into 18-hole matches. Today was 359, and to come out of here with a 345 with three freshmen and two sophomores is pretty impressive for us."

Riddle said he was encouraged by the momentum his young team has going right now.

"We've been building the last two days," he said. "That's a real good New Philadelphia team that just recently joined the OCC (Ohio Cardinal Conference). We did beat Ontario at their place yesterday and they're one of the better teams in the area.

"We're on a roll here, and I just hope these young kids keep learning, getting better and keep it going."
