Cleburne ISD searching for new head softball coach

Jun. 17—Cleburne ISD is in the process of searching for a new head coach to lead Lady Jacket softball moving forward.

Earlier this week, Paul Chavez announced he was stepping down as head coach of Cleburne softball after four seasons. Chavez will continue to teach and coach cross country and track for Cleburne ISD.

"I have been blowing and going for 29 years, often coaching two or three sports a year," Chavez wrote in a post addressed to his softball players. "I just feel like it is time for me to slow down and coach cross country and the distance runners [in track]."

Cleburne ISD Athletic Director Jeri Hall said they posted the head softball coaching position on the CISD website Monday and the plan was to start interviewing later in the week.

"We've got some good candidates," Hall said. "We're planning on interviewing a final five. So we'll see how that plays out. We have a board meeting next week and I'd like to have a head softball coach to bring to the board but we don't want to rush it."

Chavez said he appreciates the support he received during his tenure as Lady Jackets' head softball coach and he expects to see Cleburne softball contending for a playoff spot in 2022.

"I feel very strongly about this program being in a good place that has a strong foundation with a very bright future," Chavez said. "I will miss all the interactions and conversations [with] all the girls. ... I would like to thank the parents and the players and their families that have worked very hard and supported the softball program. I would also like to thank Coach Rikki Taylor, Coach [Greg] Funderburk, Coach [Mallory] Dunlap, Coach [Rick] Rodgers, CISD administration and the community for all their support. Also, thank you to the fall and summer league coaches for your time, your help and support these past four years."

Chavez said even though he will no longer be serving as head softball coach, he will always be there for any of his Lady Jacket student-athletes.

"Take care of your grades and keep working hard and good luck next season because you are going to make the playoffs," Chavez said. "This is not goodbye, it is, 'I'll see you later.' If you ever need anything, please feel free to reach out."

Since 2007, Cleburne softball has only made the playoffs once (2017).
