Two of the ACC’s premier football programs will face off Saturday when No. 4 Florida State visits Clemson in a highly anticipated conference matchup.

Florida State is a 2.5-point betting favorite against Clemson on Saturday, according to the VegasInsider consensus line. Clemson will be a home underdog in Death Valley for only the third time this decade and the first time since 2016 against Louisville.

Top storylines for the game

• Clemson-Florida State has become a classic ACC matchup. For years, the winner of this game was essentially locked into the old ACC Atlantic Division’s conference title game spot — Clemson and FSU were responsible for 13 of the last 14 (and won 11 combined ACC titles to boot). Florida State was on top for a while, with three straight wins from 2012-15 during the time it won the last BCS national title, and Clemson’s been on top lately with seven straight series wins. The Tigers, of course, have made six College Football Playoffs and won two national championships in that span. Saturday’s game could serve as another tipping point if FSU (which hasn’t won in Death Valley since 2013) can topple the Tigers, who are unranked but still plenty talented.

• On the injury front, two Clemson starters who missed the Florida Atlantic game will be game-day decisions. Coach Dabo Swinney said Wednesday that starting nickelback Andrew Mukuba (lower body) and right guard Walker Parks (lower body) are both progressing well, but their status for Saturday is TBD. If they can’t go, expect true freshman Khalil Barnes to log a second straight start at nickel and veteran offensive lineman Mitchell Mayes to start in place of Parks at right guard.

• One of the more entertaining storylines in college football this year came out of Clemson this week. In lieu of starting kicker Robert Gunn III missing two kicks against FAU, Swinney learned that former walk-on kicker Jonathan Weitz was still in school as a graduate student and had a remaining year of eligibility. On Sunday, he called Weitz, who was taking online classes remotely from his hometown of Charleston, to see if he’d rejoin the team. Weitz was practicing the very next day. Now, pending pregame warmups, he’ll start against the No. 4 team in the country. “It’s either going to be a great story, or it’s going to be terrible,” Swinney said.

• Clemson and Florida State had a public spat over FSU’s day-of cancellation of a 2020 football home game against the Tigers over COVID-19 protocols, and another bit of drama between the two schools’ fan bases emerged last week. FSU isn’t sending its band to Death Valley, and it’s attributing the decision to a change Clemson made to its visitor ticket allotment that puts the majority of those tickets high in the upper deck. That change, for what it’s worth, was communicated in March. Social media was abuzz with comments from both sides of that situation.

Clemson vs. Florida State players to watch

• Clemson RB Phil Mafah: Clemson lists Mafah as a co-starter at running back with Will Shipley, and he’s being used as such. The bruising junior is averaging 6.6 yards per carry and has a team-high three rushing touchdowns.

• Clemson LB Wade Woodaz: Woodaz on Saturday became the first Clemson linebacker to record interceptions in back-to-back games since Isaiah Simmons in 2019. He’s a versatile chess piece for the Tigers defense who can also play nickel and safety.

• FSU QB Jordan Travis: Florida State has produced a number of iconic quarterbacks, and Travis is proving to be one of the best ones. He’s No. 7 nationally in QB rating and remains one of the country’s top dual-threat guys at that position.

• FSU LB Kalen DeLoach: DeLoach, a redshirt senior linebacker, leads FSU with 4.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. He’s also second on the team with 10 total tackles.
