Top storylines for the game

  • After so much early season turmoil, Clemson can make things easy this week. The Tigers are one win away from bowl eligibility, as a sixth win Saturday would automatically qualify them for the college football postseason — and keep hopes of a passable 8-4 regular season record and decent bowl game placement alive. A lot of that will come down to consistency, which Clemson has lacked this season. Even within last week’s 31-23 win over No. 12 Notre Dame, the team’s most complete performance of the season, Clemson dodged a bullet by fumbling three times in the fourth quarter — and only losing one of them. Georgia Tech, at 5-4, also has a shot to lock up bowl eligibility Saturday in Death Valley. The Yellow Jackets haven’t won there since 2008.

  • Clemson had its fewest scholarship players available to play all season last weekend against Notre Dame. The injury outlook for the Georgia Tech game is a bit better, but not much better. Notably, running back Will Shipley is trending toward playing after taking a scary hit two weeks ago against N.C. State. Shipley was in concussion protocol last week and missed the Notre Dame game because of head/neck injury concerns. Also trending toward playing: defensive end Justin Mascoll and safety R.J. Mickens. Out or expected to be out: cornerback Sheridan Jones, safety Jalyn Phillips, wide receiver Antonio Williams and left guard Marcus Tate. Safety Sherrod Covil is out for the season.

  • It’ll be interesting to see how Clemson splits carries between Shipley and co-starting running back Phil Mafah after Mafah’s monstrous day against Notre Dame (36 carries for 186 yards and two touchdowns). That touch count, the most carries by a Clemson running back since 2016, obviously isn’t realistic every game. But Mafah, Swinney said, has the “hot hand” right now and will get plenty of chances to keep it going against Georgia Tech. Shipley, an All-ACC junior, will get his work, too. Only a nearly equal number of carries, Mafah is averaging 5.7 yards per carry to Shipley’s 4.6.

  • Led by Brent Key, the first interim coach to get elevated to the full-time job at an ACC program since Swinney at Clemson in 2008, Georgia Tech is a smart, scrappy team known to pull upsets. The Yellow Jackets enter having won five straight ACC road games, tied for the longest streak in school history. This season, they’ve toppled ranked Miami on the road and ranked UNC at home; last year, with Key as interim coach, they beat ranked Pittsburgh and UNC teams on the road. So no one’s taking Georgia Tech — second in the ACC and 14th nationally in total yards per game, averaging 200-plus on the ground and through the air — lightly. But Georgia Tech’s also good for a puzzling loss every now and then. It lost to Bowling Green by 11 points (at home!) in September.

Clemson vs. Georgia Tech players to watch

  • Clemson LG Trent Howard: Howard came off the bench as a first-time starter against Notre Dame and helped clear the way for Mafah’s career day. Could he help the Tigers (finally) find their best five on the offensive line with three regular-season games to go?

  • Clemson CB Avieon Terrell: The younger brother of former Clemson star A.J. Terrell, Avieon, a true freshman, played a career-high 60 snaps against Notre Dame on short notice and held his own against the No. 12 team in the country.

  • Georgia Tech QB Haynes King: The Texas A&M transfer has been excellent at Georgia Tech, ranking among the nation’s top 10 in total offense with 319.4 yards per game and averaging 7.2 yards per carry. He has 27 total touchdowns this year.

  • Georgia Tech DB Jaylon King: The veteran last week became the only player in the FBS this season to rack up four pass breakups, an interception and a fumble recovery in a single game when he did it against Virginia. He’s the team’s starting free safety.
