Clemson vs. Notre Dame Vegas odds

Notre Dame is a 3-point road favorite against Clemson, according to the VegasInsider.com consensus line, marking the second time this season the Tigers have been a home underdog.

Before the 2023 season, in which Clemson’s also been a 1.5-point home underdog, the last time the Tigers weren’t favored at home was in 2016 against Louisville. The last time they were a home underdog twice in a single season was in 2013 against Georgia and Florida State.

Weather forecast for Clemson, SC

Despite Upstate South Carolina’s quick turn to chilly weather this week, it should be a warmer Saturday in Death Valley: sunny with a high of 71 degrees and light winds, per the Weather.com 10-day forecast. Temperatures won’t drop until the evening.

Top storylines for the game

  • Simply put, this is a huge opportunity for Clemson. No. 12 Notre Dame is the only ranked team remaining on the Tigers’ schedule and, as per usual, one of the country’s most revered football brands. A win over the Fighting Irish would be more than just a win — it would be extra style points for Clemson, which has seen its national reputation take a hit after back-to-back ACC losses at Miami and NC State. Last year’s Notre Dame game, a 35-14 shellacking in South Bend, started Clemson’s current downhill slide. The Tigers are 7-7 in their last 14 games dating back to that loss. Saturday’s stakes are huge: Drop below .500 and put your bowl eligibility in further peril with a loss, or start November with a signature win akin to the “Bring Your Own Guts” game.

  • Injuries continue to pile up for Clemson. According to coach Dabo Swinney, a number of players on the two-deep depth chart are day-to-day heading into the Notre Dame game. The list: running back Will Shipley (who’s in concussion protocol after a scary hit at N.C. State), defensive end Justin Mascoll, defensive tackle Peter Woods and cornerback Jeadyn Lukus. Wide receiver Antonio Williams (toe) and safety R.J. Mickens (appendix surgery) have also been announced for out in the short term for Clemson. In terms of tangible impact on the game, Shipley, a preseason All-ACC pick, stands alone. If he can’t go, co-starting RB Phil Mafah should see a huge workload vs. Notre Dame.

  • Turnovers and inefficiency remain lingering issues for the Tigers on offense. They’ve lost 10 fumbles this season, tied for the second most among all FBS teams, and they rank No. 121 nationally in red zone offense with 29 scores (22 touchdowns and nine field goals) on 41 attempts. As noted by TigerIllustrated.com, there also are 25 teams in college football that have a better red-zone touchdown percentage than Clemson’s overall scoring percentage. Quarterback Cade Klubnik and company will be put to the test again against a Fighting Irish defense that is tied for No. 1 nationally in defensive touchdowns with four, No. 2 in red zone defense and No. 11 in total defense.

  • As talented and record-breaking of a quarterback as he is, Sam Hartman couldn’t crack Clemson at Wake Forest — not even during the 2021 season in which the Demon Deacons won the ACC Atlantic Division and played Pittsburgh for the conference championship. Hartman, who transferred to Notre Dame this offseason, lost starts against Clemson in 2018, 2020, 2021 and 2022 (by a score in double overtime). Swinney joked that Hartman, a sixth-year player, has been at it “for 10 years now.” The ACC’s leader in career touchdown passes with 110, Hartman is top 25 nationally in quarterback rating and has an 18:5 touchdown-interception ratio this season.

Oct 14, 2023; South Bend, Indiana, USA; Notre Dame Fighting Irish quarterback Sam Hartman (10) throws for a touchdown in the third quarter against the USC Trojans at Notre Dame Stadium.

Clemson vs. Notre Dame players to watch

  • Clemson RG Tristan Leigh: Once Clemson’s starting left tackle, Leigh has moved inside as the Tigers keep trying to find their best five offensive linemen after Walker Parks’ season-ending injury. Consistency here could help the run game majorly.

  • Clemson CB Sheridan Jones: After missing a home game with illness, Jones has been really productive over his last two appearances with five tackles apiece against Miami and N.C. State and his first interception of the season against the Hurricanes.

  • Notre Dame RB Audric Estimé: The Fighting Irish’s top weapon out of the backfield, Estimé has four 100-yard games this season and is 119 yards short of 1,000 for 2023. He tore up Clemson last year with 18 carries for 104 yards and a touchdown.

  • Notre Dame S Xavier Watts: Watts leads the country with six interceptions and has back-to-back games with two interceptions against Southern Cal and Pittsburgh. He’s only the fifth FBS player to do that since 2017 and also has 39 total tackles.
