Clerk keeps working as thief hops counter, steals cigarettes

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A convenience store clerk chose not to confront a masked man who jumped her counter Saturday afternoon and stole dozens of packages of cigarettes.

The employee was helping a customer when it happened and continued working until the thief left the business in the 500 block of South Highland.

Police said the suspect attempted to open both doors to the cashier’s booth before hopping on the counter and was after Newport cigarettes.

In the store’s surveillance video, you can see the man fill a garbage bag with the cigarettes as the clerk rings up a customer. You can also see another customer approach the checkout area.

The crook was behind the counter for just over a minute and took 110 packs of cigarettes.

The store employee who called 911 told officers the suspect was about 5’7″ and 200 pounds, but because she was helping customers, she didn’t get a good look at his clothing.

The video shows the man wearing a Reebok hoodie. Investigators said he left in a silver Kia SUV with a drive-out tag.

The suspect never displayed a weapon and is facing a felony shoplifting charge. If you recognize him or know anything about the suspect, call CrimeStoppers at (901)528-CASH.
