Cleveland Browns free agency/trade tracker: WR Marquise Goodwin signs to add speed, depth

"March Madness" is typically reserved to describe the NCAA basketball tournaments and the craziness that surrounds the event. The NFL, though, has its own version of March madness: free agency.

The league year gets underway at 4 p.m. Wednesday. However, starting at noon Monday team representatives and agents can start talking about — and essentially wrapping up — deals for literally dozens of players.

The Browns, coming off a second consecutive losing season, are expected to be among the teams active when free agency gets underway. Some of their moves may involve trades, but regardless, they're going to be looking for established NFL players to add to their roster.

Here's a one-stop shop to keep track of all of the moves the Browns are making throughout one of the busiest weeks on the NFL calendar:

Marquise Goodwin signs one-year deal to aid receiving corps

Marquise Goodwin spent two days in Cleveland at the beginning of the week visiting with the Browns. Turns out, the visit went well enough to end the week with a deal.

Goodwin will be signing a one-year deal with the Browns, a league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal. ESPN's Field Yates first reported the deal.

The team spent Monday and Tuesday of this week visiting with Goodwin in Berea, but no deal was struck at the time. However, there was an willingness to circle back later to potentially finalize a deal, sources said at the time.

Goodwin has played in 102 career NFL games since being a third-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills in 2013 out of the University of Texas. He has 187 catches for 3,023 yards and 18 touchdowns on 362 career targets.

Last season, Goodwin played for the Seattle Seahawks. He had 27 catches for 387 yards and four TDs on 42 targets in 13 games.

Browns send second-round pick to Jets for Elijah Moore, third-round pick

A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal the Browns have acquired receiver Elijah Moore from the New York Jets, along with the Jets' third-round pick, No. 74. New York will receive the Browns' second-round pick, No 42.

Last season, Moore played in 16 out of a possible 17 games, the exception being when he was inactive for a Week 7 game against the Denver Broncos as a team-disciplinary measure. He would be targeted 65 times with 37 catches for 446 yards and one touchdowns.

Moore has been utilized both out wide and in the slot almost identically, especially last season. He was lined up wide on 385 offensive snaps in 2022, compared to 341 snaps in the slot.

With the Browns, Moore fits into a receiving corps where Amari Cooper is the obvious No. 1 option, while Donovan Peoples-Jones is coming off of a break-through season in his third year in the NFL. What the Browns have been looking for, though, is a receiver who has the speed to take the top off the defense.

Linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. returns on one-year deal

Anthony Walker Jr. is returning to the Browns on another one-year deal, a league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal. ESPN's Adam Schefter was the first to report the deal.

Walker seemed to confirm the deal himself on Twitter. He tweeted a picture of himself from during a Browns game with the caption, "Nobody Cares; WORK Harder!! #JAG"

Walker joins Sione Takitaki and Jordan Kunaszyk as linebackers to re-sign with the Browns after initially testing free agency. The return of Walker, who was the heart and soul of the defense the last two seasons, is certainly the biggest.

The veteran linebacker showed how valuable he was on and off the field last season after he sustained a season-ending torn quad tendon in a Week 3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers. The very next week, the Browns defense began what turned into a season-long struggle to stop the run when they allowed more than 200 rushing yards in a loss to the Atlanta Falcons.

Linebacker Matthew Adams signs deal with Browns to aid special teams

The Browns announced the signing of linebacker Matthew Adams on Tuesday, the first outside signing at that position this offseason.

Adams, 27, spent last season playing for the Chicago Bears. He played in 10 games for Chicago, playing 188 defensive and 205 special-teams snaps.

While with the Bears, Adams had 26 combined tackles, including 17 solo and two tackles for loss. He also forced a fumble.

The former 2018 seventh-round pick for the Indianapolis Colts out of the University of Houston, Adams spent his first four seasons playing with the team that drafted him. He had 55 combined tackles, including 40 solo and two tackles for loss, as well as a fumble recovery with the Colts.

The Colts' special teams coordinator during his time there was Bubba Ventrone. Ventrone was hired last month to lead the Browns' special teams, as well as serve as assistant head coach.

Special teams is where Adams likely fits initially with the Browns, he also could factor in at linebacker. The team has re-signed Sione Takitaki and Jordan Kunaszyk at that position this offseason, while Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah, Jacob Phillips, Tony Field II, Sam Kamara and Storey Jackson are the only other ones currently on the roster.

Josh Dobbs signs one-year deal to be Deshaun Watson's backup

A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal that Josh Dobbs is being signed to a one-year deal by the Browns. Dobbs' agent, Mike McCartney, initially tweeted out the news of the former Browns backup quarterback's return to Cleveland.

Dobbs is coming into a role with which he's very familiar after having spent time with the Browns last season, which is why he was always viewed as a likely option to be signed this offseason. He originally signed with Cleveland as the No. 3 quarterback last April behind Watson and Jacoby Brissett, but rose to be Brissett's backup for the 11 games Watson was suspended by the league.

When Watson returned to the active roster on Nov. 28, Dobbs was put on waivers by the team. The Detroit Lions initially signed him to their practice squad on Dec. 5, and elevated him to the active roster on Dec. 17, but he did not play in a game.

The Tennessee Titans signed Dobbs on Dec. 21. He started the Titans' final two games of the season against the Dallas Cowboys and the Jacksonville Jaguars as they pushed for an AFC South championship.

Dobbs moves in front of Kellen Mond in the Browns quarterback room. Mond was picked up off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings on Aug. 31 and spent last season as the No. 3 quarterback throughout the season.

Mike Ford gets one-year deal to bolster secondary, special teams

Former Atlanta Falcons cornerback Mike Ford has agreed to a deal with the Browns. Ford, 27, himself hinted at the news, tweeting "Dawg Pound (dog emoji)" on Monday morning.

The former undrafted free agent out of Southeast Missouri State has played five seasons in the NFL for three different teams. Last year with the Falcons, though, was the first time he played a full season.

Ford started two of the 17 games in which he played for Atlanta, although he didn't play a snap at cornerback after Week 8. He had 15 combined tackles, seven solo stops and one tackle for loss.

The place where Ford mostly likely would factor in the secondary is in the slot. Of his 83 defensive snaps last year in Atlanta, 50 were played as a slot corner.

Ford has 1,067 career snaps on special teams, compared to 635 on defense.

Browns re-sign linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk to one-year deal

Browns re-signed linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk to a one-year deal on Monday. The deal is reportedly worth $1.232 million, with $500,000 fully guaranteed. The base salary will be $1.08 million.

The 26-year-old out of the University of California was signed by the Browns during training camp after spending the 2020 and 2021 seasons with Washington. However, he was among the final cuts in August.

The Browns originally brought him back to the practice squad, but he was a game-day elevation for the first two games of the season. He was eventually signed to the active roster on Sept. 21, before the Week 3 win over the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kunaszyk played in a career-high 15 games for the Browns, including two starts. He played 101 defensive snaps and 317 special-teams snaps during the season, finishing with 22 combined tackles, including 14 solo stops. He also forced a fumble.

Browns announce signings of TE Jordan Akins, DT Maurice Hurst Jr.

The news out of Berea Saturday morning wasn't earth-shattering. Instead, it was more of the clerical nature, as they officially announced the signings of tight end Jordan Akins and defensive end Maurice Hurst Jr.

Akins' deal was first announced on Friday afternoon by his agent, David Canter. The former Houston Texans tight end who's now reunited with his former teammate, Deshaun Watson, received a two-year deal.

Hurst's agreement first emerged late Wednesday evening. The former University of Michigan product and Raiders draft pick has played just two games since the start of the 2021 season due to pair of season-ending injuries, including one sustained in training camp last year.

Tight end Jordan Akins reunited with former Texans teammate Deshaun Watson

Tight end Jordan Akins will be signing with the Browns, his agent David Canter announced on Twitter Friday afternoon. Akins had been on a visit with the team throughout the day, according to a league source.

Akins spent the first five seasons of his NFL career playing for the Houston Texans, including his first three seasons playing with current Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson. The former third-round pick of the 2018 draft out of Central Florida has played in 73 career games, with 26 starts under his belt.

From 2018-20, Akins was among Watson's targets with Houston. In 45 games during that span, he was targeted 129 times with 90 catches for 1,046 yards and three touchdowns.

Akins is coming off a 2022 season in which he had a career-high 495 yards and five touchdowns on 37 catches, which matched a career high from 2020. He was targeted by Texans quarterbacks 54 times, one shy of the career-high 55 targets he saw in 2019.

For his career, Akins has 151 receptions on 216 targets for 1,755 yards. He has eight career touchdowns.

Defensive tackle Trysten Hill the latest addition up front

A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal on Thursday the Browns will sign former Dallas Cowboys defensive tackle Trysten Hill to a free-agent contract. The exact terms were not immediately known.

Hill was a second-round draft pick in 2019 out of Central Florida by the Cowboys. He played in 25 games with Dallas before it released him after the Nov. 1 trade deadline last year, at which time the Arizona Cardinals picked him up.

In six games with the Cardinals before going on season-ending injured reserve with a knee sprain, Hill had a sack, six combined tackles, three tackles for loss and two quarterback hits. He had six combined tackles, two tackles for loss and three quarterback hits in seven games with the Cowboys last season.

Hill becomes the fourth defensive lineman the Browns have agreed to terms with this week. They officially announced the signings of former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson and former Houston Texans defensive end Ogbonnia Okoronkwo on Wednesday, the same day they agreed to terms with former Raiders and 49ers defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr.

Linebacker Sione Takitaki's one-year deal brings him back to Browns

The Browns announced on Thursday that they and linebacker Sione Takitaki have agreed to a new one-year deal. The contract for the former 2019 second-round draft pick, which was originally reported on Tuesday, is worth around $2.6 million.

"Taki is a physical player who plays the game hard," Browns coach Kevin Stefanski said in a statement. "He's a great teammate. He was playing at a high level for us last year prior to his injury and he's working his tail off to make a full recovery."

Takitaki is the second one of the Browns' own unrestricted free agents to get a deal done with the team. Center Ethan Pocic agreed to a three-year deal worth a reported $18 million plus incentives, which was announced on Wednesday.

Safety Juan Thornhill's three-year deal made official by Browns

The deal, which was first reported on Wednesday, is for three years and $21 million with $14 million fully guaranteed at signing over the first two years.

"I can't wait to get on the field and show Cleveland what I have," Thornhill said in a statement. "Having the chance to play on this defense is going to be special and I'm thankful to have the opportunity. Let's go Dawg Pound."

One could call Thornhill's performance this past season for the eventual Super Bowl champions the best of his career, at least in many of the statistics. He had a career-high-tying three interceptions to go with career highs in passes defensed (nine), sacks (one), combined tackles (71) and tackles for loss (four).

Defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr. agrees to one-year deal to add depth

The Browns are adding defensive tackle Maurice Hurst Jr. on a one-year deal to help with their defensive line depth, a league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal late Wednesday night. The Orange and Brown Report's Brad Stainbrook was the first to report.

Hurst, a former 2018 fifth-round draft pick of the Raiders out of the University of Michigan, did not play during the 2022 season due to a torn bicep he sustained on the fourth day of training camp with the San Francisco 49ers. He played two games, recording two tackles, for the 49ers in 2021 before suffering a season-ending calf injury.

Between 2018-20, Hurst played in 40 games for the Raiders, including 17 starts. He had 76 combined tackles in those three seasons, eight sacks, eight tackles for loss and 17 quarterback hits.

Hurst also has one career interception, two fumble recoveries and one forced fumble.

Safety Juan Thornhill agrees to three-year deal with Browns

The Browns have reached an agreement with former Kansas City Chiefs safety Juan Thornhill, a league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal.

The deal, first reported by the NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, is for three years and $21 million, with $14 million fully guaranteed at signing over the first two years

The Browns found themselves in the safety market when they elected to release John Johnson III. They do still have Grant Delpit on the roster, but the 2020 draft pick is in the final year of his contract.

Thornhill comes in and allows Delpit to play more in the box under new defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz. He played 857 of his 1,249 defensive snaps last season at free safety for the Chiefs.

Dalvin Tomlinson, Obonnnia Okoronkwo multi-year deals announced

The Browns made official their two big free-agent signings which had been reported on Monday: defensive linemen Dalvin Tomlinson and Obonnnia Okoronkwo.

Tomlinson, who played for the Minnesota Vikings last season, is getting a four-year contract. The deal is worth $57 million, with $27.5 million guaranteed.

Okoronkwo, who played for the Houston Texans last year, is getting a three-year deal. The deal is worth $19 million, with $12.5 million guaranteed, and a maximum value of $22 million.

The two defensive linemen were the only two deals with other teams' free agents the Browns made during the NFL's negotiating period that started Monday at noon and ran until 3:59 p.m. Wednesday.

John Johnson III, Jadeveon Clowney released with post-June 1 designation

The Browns announced a pair of moves to help free up some space on the salary cap on Wednesday. One was expected, the other was clerical in nature.

Safety John Johnson III and defensive end Jadeveon Clowney were both released with post-June 1 designations on Wednesday afternoon. Johnson was still under contract for one year, while Clowney was technically an unrestricted free agent.

The move to cut Johnson was confirmed by Berry while at the NFL Combine on Feb. 28. It will save the Browns $9.75 million on the cap.

Clowney had still a $1.6-million hit on the 2023 Browns. The move turns that money, from a prorated bonus, into $1.6 million in dead money instead.

Center Ethan Pocic three-year contract officially announced

The Browns officially announced Wednesday afternoon they have re-signed center Ethan Pocic to a three-year contract. The deal, which was originally reported Monday, is believed to be worth $18 million with incentives.

"I'm excited to get to work and just continue to try to grow as a player," Pocic said in a statement. "I had a lot of fun. It's fun to play in that room and be coached by great coaches and play with great players around you. It's just fun to go to work with them."

Pocic, who missed four games in November and December after a Week 11 knee injury, earned an overall grade of 79 out of 100 from Pro Football Focus. That grade ranked third in the NFL, behind only the two starting centers in the Super Bowl: Philadelphia's Jason Kelce (89.5) and Kansas City's Creed Humphrey (89.9).

Cornerback A.J. Green's one-year contract officially announced

The Browns made official a move that had been known since Sunday evening when they announced Wednesday they had re-signed cornerback A.J. Green.

Green, who's been with the team since 2020, was signed to a one-year deal. He was originally a exclusive rights free agent, but the Browns did not tender him at the same time they did two others, cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. and defensive tackle Ben Stille, on March 7.

“A.J. has grown up in our system and has gotten better every year since he first joined the team as an undrafted free agent," coach Kevin Stefanski said in a statement. "He’s been ready every time he has been called upon and his versatility is something that we value.”

Last year was Green's most productive, as he appeared in all 17 games for the Browns. He recorded 13 tackles and also had an interception of Cincinnati's Joe Burrow in a Week 8 Browns' win in Cleveland.

Linebacker Sione Takitaki reaches one-year deal to return to Browns

A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal that the Browns and linebacker Sione Takitaki have agreed to a new one-year deal. The contract for the former 2019 second-round draft pick is worth around $2.6 million.

Takitaki is the second one of the Browns' own unrestricted free agents to get a deal done with the team during the two-day negotiation period in advance of the new league year starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday. Center Ethan Pocic agreed to a three-year deal worth a reported $18 million plus incentives on Monday.

The concern around the deal was due to the torn ACL Takitaki sustained in a Dec. 4 win at the Houston Texans. He finished the season on the injured reserve, but is expected to back back close to the start of the season.

Takitaki finished with a career-high 71 combined tackles in 12 games last season. He added a sack, a forced fumble and four tackles for loss.

Ex-Vikings DT Dalvin Tomlinson to sign four-year deal

It took the Browns until late in the evening of the first day of the negotiating period, but they finally landed a big-ticket defensive tackle.

The Browns will sign former Minnesota Vikings defensive tackle Dalvin Tomlinson when the new league year opens at 4 p.m. Wednesday, a league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal. Tomlinson's deal will be for four years and $57 million, with $27.5 million guaranteed.

NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was the first to report.

Defensive tackle was seen as a massive position of need for the Browns after that position group graded out among the worst in the NFL last season. Outside of Taven Bryan, a 2018 first-round pick of the Jacksonville Jaguars who signed a one-year deal with Cleveland last offseason, the rest of the defensive-tackle rotation all had three years or less in league.

Browns to sign former Houston Texans DE Ogbonnia Okoronkwo

The Browns plan on signing former Houston Texans defensive lineman Ogbonnia Okoronkwo when the free-agency period opens on Wednesday, a league source confirms to the Beacon Journal.

The deal for Okoronkwo is a three-year, $19 million deal. Of that, $12.5 million is guaranteed, with a maximum value of $22 million. Cleveland.com's Mary Kay Cabot was the first to report.

Okoronkwo recorded 44 combined tackles this past season, playing in 17 games for the Texans. He also set career highs with five sacks, nine tackles for loss, 11 quarterback hits and two passes defensed.

Ethan Pocic to re-sign with Browns to further solidify offensive line

A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal that center Ethan Pocic will re-sign with the Browns. The deal, according to the NFL Network's Mike Garafolo, is for three years and at a base salary of $18 million, with incentives.

Pocic originally signed a one-year deal last March with the Browns after five years in Seattle. He took over the starting center job when Nick Harris went down with a knee injury in the preseason opener.

Despite spending four games on injured reserve due to a knee injury suffered in a mid-November game against Buffalo, Pocic played at a high level in his first season in Cleveland. He graded out at a 79 out of 100 overall according to Pro Football Focus.

The deal would keep Pocic signed through the 2025 season, which is in line with what the Browns have done with three other starters along their offensive front. Guards Joel Bitonio and Wyatt Teller, as well as right tackle Jack Conklin, are all signed through at least that season.

Deshaun Watson, as expected, has deal restructured

The first move the Browns needed to make before doing anything was to restructure quarterback Deshaun Watson's deal. That's exactly what they did Monday morning.

A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal Monday morning the team had restructured Watson's base salary of $46 million to free up nearly $36 million in cap space, just hours before the NFL's legal tampering period begins. NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was the first to report.

According to Spotrac, the Browns converted $44.835 million of Watson's salary into a signing bonus, while adding a void year in 2027. The move cleared $35.868 million cap space, down from a league-high $54.993 million.

Watson's base salary in 2023 will be $1.165 million. The new cap number for Watson this season is $19.125 million. The next three seasons, 2024-26, the number will be $63.96 million, while there will be a $8.967 million void year in 2027.

Cornerback A.J. Green to return on a one-year deal

The first move the Browns made on the eve of the legal tampering window opening was with one of their own. A league source confirmed to the Beacon Journal the team was bringing back cornerback A.J. Green on a one-year contract.

Green was one of three players on the 2022 roster who were exclusive rights free agents. The Browns tendered the other two — cornerback Thomas Graham Jr. and defensive tackle Ben Stille — earlier this month, but didn't initially do that for Green.

Originally signed as an undrafted free agent out of Oklahoma State in 2020, Green has grown into a solid depth piece in the secondary. He's played in 31 career regular-season and one playoff game with the Browns, including all 17 games in 2022.

For his career, Green has 39 combined tackles, two interceptions, two fumble recoveries and seven passes defensed.

Cleveland Browns free agents from 2022 roster

The Browns have 19 players from their 2022 roster who are unrestricted free agents. They have one other who is a restricted free agent.

The most notable among those free agents are quarterback Jacoby Brissett, defensive end Jadeveon Clowney and running back Kareem Hunt. All three of those players are expected to depart.

The Browns feel they have a chance to bring back at least one of Anthony Walker Jr. or Sione Takitaki, two of their three starting linebackers last year prior to both ending the season on injured reserve. Center Ethan Pocic is another one they could bring back, depending on the market.

What is the NFL 'legal tampering' period?

Starting Monday at 12:00 p.m. and concluding at Wednesday at 3:59 p.m., NFL teams can contact and enter into contract negotiations with unrestricted free agents.

No prospective unrestricted free agent is permitted to execute a contract a team until 4:00 p.m. on March 15.
