Cleveland Browns rookie David Bell to start camp on PUP list with foot injury

BEREA – David Bell's first training camp with the Browns will have a delayed start.

Bell, the third-round pick (99th overall) out of Purdue in April, was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list on Friday, the team announced. The reason for the move was due to a minor foot injury that isn't expected to be a long-term issue.

The rookie receiver will count toward the active roster limit of 90 players. Bell is eligible to be activated from the list upon passing a physical.

Bell is expected to compete with Donovan Peoples-Jones and Anthony Schwartz to be the No. 2 receiver option behind Amari Cooper. He was coming off a strong end to the voluntary offseason program and veteran minicamp last month.

The Browns' rookies and quarterbacks, including Deshaun Watson, Jacoby Brissett and newly-signed Josh Rosen, reported to training camp in Berea on Friday. The veterans are expected in on Tuesday, with the first full-squad practice on Wednesday.

Also on Friday, the Browns announced the signing of Rosen and fourth-round draft pick Perrion Winfrey. The signing of Winfrey, the No. 108 pick out of Oklahoma, means all nine of the team's draft picks are under contract.

Winfrey is expected to challenge for playing time along the interior defensive line. He'll join a rotation that includes free-agent signee Taven Bryan, along with holdovers Jordan Elliott, Sheldon Day and Tommy Togiai.

Rosen agreed to a one-year deal with the Browns on Thursday, the same day both he and A.J. McCarron worked out for the team. The former No. 10 pick in the 2018 draft by Arizona, he'll be the fourth quarterback in camp along with Watson, Brissett and Joshua Dobbs.

The expectation for Rosen is that he'll back up Brissett during the regular season while Watson serves any potential suspension he may receive from disciplinary officer Sue L. Robinson for possible personal conduct policy violations. There has been no indication when that decision will be announced.
