Cleveland Clinic updates community on Mentor Hospital
Feb. 20—Cleveland Clinic invited residents to learn about the upcoming opening of the Clinic's Mentor Hospital this summer during a pair of recent town hall meetings.
Caregivers and administrators were on hand as were local leaders to discuss community and economic impact as well as the construction update and employment opportunities.
On Feb. 18, the meeting was held at the Lakeland Community College Holden University Center. Mentor City Manager Ken Fillipiak and Director of Economic Development and International Trade Kevin Malecek addressed the crowd prior to the Cleveland Clinic's presentation to discuss impacts and benefits the hospital will have for the city and the entire county.
"We are very excited about Mentor Hospital and feel like it will be a big benefit to the community going forward," Fillipiak said. "This will provide a transformational level of health service to meet the needs of the city and the whole county."
Fillipiak said in 2022, Mentor responded to approximately 9,000 emergency runs, 7,000 of which were medical calls. Instead of having to be transported to Hillcrest Hospital in Mayfield Heights or one of the other local hospitals, Fillipiak said the new hospital located near Interstate 90 and State Route 615 will "lessen the stress" on responders, and those units used to transport patients will be put back in rotation for other calls much quicker.
Mentor Hospital — which as of now is scheduled to open on July 11 — will have 34 inpatient rooms, 23 exam and special rooms, four operating rooms and 12 beds in post-anesthesia care unit. It will also have a lab, imaging and pharmacy.
Clinical services provided at Mentor Hospital will include orthopaedic surgery, general and digestive surgery and an emergency department with a helipad on site Outpatient Services include orthopaedics, digestive disease and general surgery, urology, pulmonary and cardiology.
Malecek discussed the economic impact it will have on the area, including providing needed revenue for emergency services.
"Our main tax source is income tax, and this added revenue offers us the opportunity to invest back in the police and fire departments to help keep our residents safe," Malecek said. "To have a partnership with the Cleveland Clinic at the location will benefit the entire I-90/615 corridor and increase residential and industrial development in the area."
Dr. Rick Parker, president of Hillcrest Hospital as well as Mentor Hospital, gave a presentation detailing many of the amenities of the new facility and provided a detailed update of the construction process. He expressed the Cleveland Clinic's enthusiasm for having this new location in Mentor.
Parker added it is imperative to find qualified staff prior to the opening in July.
