The Guardians opened the doors to Progressive Field with a loss, as they fell 5-3 to the Seattle Mariners Friday afternoon in the home opener.

The Guardians built a 3-0 lead before the Mariners scored five unearned runs, all in the fifth and sixth innings. The decisive blow was Julio Rodriguez's two-run home run to left-center field off Guardians reliever Nick Sandlin that just cleared the 19-foot wall in left field and put the Mariners on top 5-3.

Guardians starter Aaron Civale was tagged for four earned runs in 5⅔ innings. After tossing seven scoreless innings in his 2023 debut, Civale opened Friday's start with four scoreless innings before the Mariners ended that streak in the fifth.

Myles Straw's torrid start to the season continued, as he went 1-for-3 with an RBI single. Josh Bell, in his first game in Cleveland as a member of the Guardians, also had an RBI single.
