President Donald Trump said Wednesday he wants the next coronavirus relief package to be "very generous" with direct stimulus payments to Americans that are potentially more than $1,200. "It may go higher than that, actually," Trump said in an interview with ABC affiliate KMID in Texas during a trip to the state. When he left the White House earlier in the day, Trump said his priorities for this next relief measure are those payments and an eviction moratorium.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation's top infectious disease expert, suggested Wednesday that Americans consider wearing goggles or an eye shield in addition to face masks to ensure more complete protection against the coronavirus. “If you have goggles or an eye shield, you should use it,” he said in an interview with ABC News on Instagram Live Wednesday. While eye protection isn't “universally recommended” at this time, he said it could become a standard recommendation “if you really want perfect protection of the mucosal surfaces.”
Though nothing was destroyed, the United States has been complaining for over a year about Russia's use of a maneuverable new breed of “inspector” satellites that can spy on U.S. satellites and might be employed as weapons. The Russians, for their part, argue that the U.S. has developed elaborate Earth-based weaponry capable of attacking an adversary's satellite network in war. Both sides clearly agree that it's high time to sit down and at least begin a conversation about it.
A 29-year-old man was arrested in Miami Beach, Florida, after firing "four warning shots" and telling a mother and her son that they weren't social distancing in a Miami hotel lobby. A woman and her family, guests at the Crystal Beach Suites Hotel, had checked in earlier in the day on July 27, according to a Miami Beach Police Department report provided by public information officer Ernesto Rodriguez. While she was there, as they waited by the lobby elevator, they encountered Douglas Marks, who they did not know.
A police officer charged in connection with the death of George Floyd has applied to have his charges dropped, court documents show. Lawyers for Tou Thao, 34, have put forward a motion stating that the former Minneapolis police officer could not have known that Derek Chauvin, who knelt on Floyd's neck for almost nine minutes, was about to commit a crime. Protesters have taken to the streets on a daily basis in some cities, demanding greater race equality and an end to police brutality.
Top U.S. Republican lawmakers on Thursday rejected President Donald Trump's suggestion to delay the Nov. 3 presidential election, saying the contest should be held as planned even as they mostly backed his concerns about mail-in voting. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told television journalists from his home state of Kentucky that the election would go ahead as scheduled, and House Republican Leader Kevin McCarthy rejected the suggested delay out of hand. "Never in the history of the federal elections have we ever not held an election, and we should go forward with our election," McCarthy, a Trump ally, declared at a news conference.
Some call it a floating city, a flotilla of 260 mostly Chinese fishing vessels near the Galapagos archipelago that is stirring diplomatic tension and raising worries about the threat to sharks, manta rays and other vulnerable species in waters around the UNESCO world heritage site. Yet the vast fleet is in international waters, outside a maritime border around the Galapagos and also outside coastal waters off Ecuador, which controls the archipelago. That means the fleet, one of the biggest seen in years off South America's Pacific coast, is likely to fish with minimal monitoring until its holds are full.
Toymaker Mattel has unveiled a new collection of politically active Barbie dolls, including a Black woman running for president and her all-female campaign team, to inspire girls to pursue positions in leadership. Rounding out the four-part set are a campaign manager, fundraiser and voter — the last of which seemed to offend Donald Trump Jr., who attempted to make a joke about the doll on Twitter. "Barbie is not, and has never been, affiliated with a political party," a Mattel representative told the Los Angeles Times on Thursday in a statement.

The shed was torn down years ago, but neighbors said Brueckner once spent hours inside.

The 50-year-old worked on the political campaigns of former US president George W Bush, former Republican presidential nominee John McCain and former California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, before setting up the group.
A Tennessee state senator has been charged with stealing more than $600,000 in federal funds received by a health care company she directed and using the money to pay for her wedding and other personal expenses, federal prosecutors said Wednesday. A criminal complaint unsealed Wednesday charges state Sen. Katrina Robinson with theft and embezzlement involving government programs and wire fraud, U.S. Attorney D. Michael Dunavant said in a news release. Robinson, a Democrat elected to the General Assembly in 2018 from a Memphis district, is also the director of The Healthcare Institute, which provides training for jobs in the health care field, prosecutors said.
Ghislaine Maxwell has lost a desperate last-minute appeal to stop “embarrassing” confidential documents from being released. US District Judge Loretta Preska confirmed her ruling that the files must be unsealed and released to the public, despite Ms Maxwell's lawyers' “extraordinary request” for her to reconsider. The British socialite, 58, had tried to argue that the government wrongfully used depositions filed in her civil lawsuit to bring criminal charges.

CNN host Jake Tapper has demanded that Republican congressman Jim Jordan apologise for playing an edited video that misleadingly showed reporters describe the George Floyd protests as “peaceful”. On Tuesday, attorney general William Barr took part in his first congressional hearing since he took the role, and faced questions on topics including his response to the protests and the subsequent deployment of federal law enforcement agents to cities such as Portland, Oregon. During his opening statement at the hearing in his role as ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee, Mr Jordan played a clip that juxtaposed reporters calling the protests “peaceful” with violence at some demonstrations.

Over 50 of the children have disabilities or are children at risk because their caregivers are sick, it said.
