Cliff Collapse Near Canaries Beach Prompts Emergency Response

A section of cliff collapsed onto a road close near a beach on La Gomera, one of Spain’s Canary Islands, prompting emergency search-and-rescue operations amid fears people were missing.

Various local authorities, including rescue, police, fire, and civil protection, responded to the scene, officials said. The local government’s Emergency and Rescue Group (GES) dispatched two helicopters to the site of the collapse.

The landslide also severed the roadway between Las Vueltas and Argaga, according to officials in the nearby town of Valle Gran Rey.

This footage from Valle Gran Rey officials shows helicopters flying to and from the site. The occupants of several beach-side caravans that were close to the collapse were transferred by helicopter to Las Vueltas “in good condition”, the officials said.
