Clifton OK's new Starbucks with drive-thru, electric charging stations

CLIFTON — Java-deprived Route 3 motorists may, by next summer, have a new caffeine stop at the ON3 site once home to pharmaceutical giant Hoffmann-La Roche.

The city's Planning Board approved an application for a new Starbucks location at its Thursday night meeting.

The approved application calls for the construction of a 2,800-square-foot café and restaurant, complete with a drive-thru, electric charging stations and new landscaping in what once was part of the Roche parking lot.

The Starbucks will be across Metro Boulevard, the main roadway traversing the campus from Route 3 to Kingsland Avenue, from the proposed hotel and an 80,000-square-foot medical office building, which broke ground this spring.

Although most of the traffic is expected to come from Route 3, the coffee shop is also among the amenities that the ON3 campus offers to its prestigious clients, which include Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine, Ralph Lauren and Eisai Inc., a Japanese pharmaceutical firm.

ON3, which is owned by Prism Capital Partners, expects that more than 5,500 people will be employed on its site. Representing New Jersey's largest contemplated redevelopment, the mixed-use campus will integrate office and R&D facilities, recreational, hospitality and wellness options, among others, Prism principal Eugene Diaz said.
