Climber rescued from Grizzly Creek
GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (KREX) — A climbing accident in Glenwood Springs ended with a helicopter ride to the hospital with unknown injuries on Saturday.
Glenwood Springs firefighters responded to the Grizzly Creek Trailhead at around 1:30 p.m. on Saturday for a report of a fallen climber. The climber reportedly fell 40 feet on a multi-pitch climb called “Mudflap Girl”. According to firefighters, the injured climber was about 400 to 500 feet up the 700-foot tall climb.
The Garfield County Search and Rescue Team, Mountain Rescue Aspen and Vail Mountain Rescue teamed up for the rescue due to the difficulty and extensive manpower required to extricate the victim. The High-Altitude Army National Guard Aviation Training Site (HAATS) in coordination with Mountain Rescue Aspen was able to reach the fallen climber and his climbing partner using a helicopter. A single rescuer rappeled from the helicopter to retrieve the climbers.
Incident Commander Battalion Chief Jesse Hood believes the professionalism of all 36 rescuers involved led to the success of the operation.
