Clinton's Ames wins national title at Tournament of Champions

WHEELING, West Virginia — The Clinton wrestling program sent a group to the Tournament of Champions back on April 23.

The Tournament of Champions is the largest, single day meet in the nation.

Of the Redwolves eight wrestlers, seven took all-american honors while one took home a national title.

Sophomore Maurice Ames won a national title at 138 pounds as he went 4-0. Ames won an 8-2 decision in his opening match before taking a 2-0 to get into the semifinal.

In the semifinal, Ames defeated teammate, eighth-grader Blake Sloan, and then won the championship in a 1-0 thriller.

Sloan went on to take third in the 138 pound division as he went 5-1, with the lone loss coming against Ames.

On the following day, Sloan wrestled for Dundee and went 4-1.

Sophomore Faith Blackburn took third in the girls 136-147 pound division.

Blackburn began the day with and then picked up back-to-back wins. The next day, Blackburn wrestled for Michigan Revolution in a dual meet where she went 5-1.

Eighth-grader Sammy Stewart took third at 102-pounds as he went 3-1 on the day.

Another eighth-grader, Braden Broderick (114 pounds) and sophomore Connor Younts (126) each took fifth in their weight classes as Broderick went 4-2 and Younts went 5-2.

Eighth-grader Bryce Randolph took sixth at 138 pounds as he went 2-3 while freshman Braylon Long went 2-2 at 106 pounds and did not place.
