Get up close with history at this new SC Revolutionary War event ahead of the 250th anniversary

Did you know South Carolina helped play a key role in the Revolutionary War?

The American War of Independence lasted from 1775 until 1783 and ended with Americans Defeating the British.

“As one of the 13 original colonies, South Carolina took a lead in the Revolutionary War, with more than 200 Revolutionary War battles fought in South Carolina, along with countless military engagements recorded on South Carolina soil,” according to South Carolina State Parks’ website. “These Revolutionary War battles in South Carolina, often dramatic and pivotal in the ultimate outcome of the war, helped transform the King’s colonies into a union of states.”

The Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage will host an event on June 20 for guests to explore the Palmetto State’s direct role in the Revolutionary War and American independence, and how the state will soon celebrate a 250-year anniversary for the Revolutionary era.

The activity will take place from 1-2 p.m. at The Morris Center for Lowcountry Heritage, which can be found at 10782 S. Jacob Smart Boulevard in Ridgeland.

Attendees will also have the opportunity to learn about the South Carolina American Revolution Sestercentennial Commission (SC250) and hear a presentation from Bill Davies, Vice Chairman of the Commission, about the organization and what they are doing to celebrate the 250th anniversary of this historical revolutionary era.

The commission was established in 2018 by the state General Assembly under the South Carolina Department of Archives and History.

Interested individuals and families looking to include an educational element into their summers can preregister for the event online at https://www.morrisheritagecenter.org/event-5246832.

As of the afternoon of June 14, only 63 registration spaces remained.
