Closed Steak n' Shake in Columbia County auctioning off entire restaurant's contents
Bidders have until noon Sept. 5 to tender their offers in an auction for the entire contents of a shuttered Columbia County Steak n' Shake.
Vanish Auctions, a Florida company specializing in restaurant liquidations, will keep the bidding open for more than 100 lots, including commercial kitchen equipment, appliances, indoor furniture, patio furniture, shelving, crockery, cutlery, paper goods, cleaning chemicals, framed wall art and food products.

The restaurant, which closed in August, is just off Interstate 20’s Exit 194 to Jimmie Dyess Parkway, at 4329 Belair Frontage Rd.
Steak n' Shake opened there in September 2012 to overflow crowds eager to sample the casual restaurant chain’s trademark Steakburgers and thin, crispy fries. The property changed ownership from the original franchisee in 2017, and it was last sold in December 2022 to an Aiken-based limited liability company for $2.275 million.
During a spate of regional hepatitis-A outbreaks in 2019, a single Steak n’ Shake worker at the Augusta location tested positive for the contagious infection. The worker was taken off work and co-workers were offered vaccines.
The restaurant passed its most recent county health inspection in June with a perfect score showing no violations. Some customers on social media told a different story, with reviewers on the crowdsourced business commentary site Yelp complaining in recent weeks about poor service, the persistent unavailability of milkshakes, and even finding peeled paint in a fountain drink.
