Closures planned as inspection of Roebling Suspension Bridge begins Monday

The John A. Roebling Bridge was once the longest suspension bridge in the world.

An inspection of the John A. Roebling Bridge began Monday and drivers should prepare for intermittent closures as work continues through next week, according to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet.

Inspectors will be working Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., officials said in a news release. The work is scheduled to be completed by Aug. 10, depending on weather conditions.

Officials said the bridge, which connects Cincinnati and Covington, will have to close as equipment is moved, adding that one pedestrian walkway will also be closed during the inspection period.

Six closures, each lasting up to 60 minutes, may occur between 9 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. as the inspection progresses, officials said.

In April, the bridge reopened after nearly 14 months due to a $4.7 million restoration project, which included masonry work and repairing and replacing sections of its sandstone towers.

Previously, In 2019, the bridge was closed for four months after chunks of sandstone fell from one of the towers.
