Clovis boys earn second place in Goddard tourney

Apr. 1—ROSWELL — Clovis Christian's boys put together a solid showing and finished second by three strokes to host Roswell Goddard in Thursday' Rocket Invitational golf tournament at the New Mexico Military Golf Course.

Led by junior Noah McKay, the Eagles shot a four-man score of 338 to 335 for the Rockets. Clovis High was ninth in the 12-team tournament at 373. McKay was the third medalist in the event, shooting 43-38 — 81.

On the girls side, the Lady Wildcats finished third at 367, trailing Alamogordo (344) and Goddard (356). Senior Jolei Adkins led Clovis, placing third individually with a score of 42-43 — 85.

Senior Carter Teune followed McKay for CCS, shooting 40-44 — 85, while senior Caleb Van Beek carded 41-44 — 85. All five Eagles shot 93 or better.

For the Wildcats, senior Jett Stone had the team's top score at 43-46 — 89 while junior Robert Albin followed at 44-49 — 93. Robb Sexsmith of Los Lunas was the individual medalist at two-over-par 74.

Clovis put four players under 100 for the girls. The individual medalist was Alamo's Corynn Speer at 80.

Texico, led by senior Liz Elam's 49-42 — 91, came in fifth at 418. Portales, paced by Paige Yazzie at 104, was sixth at 440.

CCS third at Hobbs tourney — The Eagles claimed a third-place finish in Tuesday's Buck Brandon Invitational, hosted by Hobbs at Rockwind Country Club.

CCS shot a team score of 344, trailing Hobbs (316) and Lovington 335).

McKay again posted the team's top tally at 38-39 — 77. Hobbs' Kelen Ownsby won it with an even-par 72.

Stone and senior Garrett Anderson led the Cats with respective rounds of 43-44 — 87 and 41-46 — 87. Clovis finished seventh in the eight-team event at 373.

Meantime, Adkins shot 44-48 — 92 and senior Kiaya Gallegos followed at 49-48 — 97 for the Lady Cats, who were fourth at 410. Hobbs won it at 359, 15 strokes ahead of runnerup Goddard.

Texico sent only three players to the event. The Lady Wolverines were led by Elam's round of 45-48 — 93.

Clovis returns to action on Monday in the Artesia Invite, then will be joined by Portales and the CCS boys in Thursday's Lovington Invite. Next up for Texico's girls is a two-day tournament at Ruidoso on Monday and Tuesday.
