Clovis man sentenced to 10 years in prison

Feb. 4—CLOVIS — A Clovis man is off to prison for 10 years pleading guilty Monday to a number of charges in an incident that happened in June 2022.

Ninth Judicial District Attorney, Quentin Ray, said Fabian Vasquez, 32, pled guilty to two counts of false imprisonment, two counts of aggravated battery-strangulation of a household member and Interference with communications.

Ray said Vasquez did not have any prior felony convictions.

According to a news release from Ray, it was June 18, 2022 when Clovis Police officers were dispatched to a domestic in progress at 1913 Cameo Street.

Officers made contact with the victim who said Vasquez had beat and strangled her until she passed out. Once she woke up Vasquez would not let her leave by pinning her down and took her cell phone away. The victim attempted to leave thru the shower window and Vasquez dragged her back into the residence. A neighbor came out and saw Vasquez punching the victim in the face and called 911. The victim's son was in the residence during the incident.

Ninth Judicial District Judge Drew Tatum presided over the hearing and sentenced Vasquez to ten years in the Department of Corrections.

Vasquez will not be eligible for parole until May 2029.

The news release said the victim gave a victim impact statement to the court.

"I choose to forgive Vasquez in order to heal," she said. " Holding onto anger hardens my heart and I cannot live this way for myself and my son".

Tatum said,"Mr. Vasquez, I cannot imagine any situation to justify what you did. I give her [victim] a ton of credit. She chooses to forgive you. She is not a victim, she is a survivor."

The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorney, Brett Carter.

Vasquez was represented by attorney Todd Bullion of Albuquerque.

When contacted Wednesday, Buillion had no comment on the case.
