Clovis' Mayfield finishes second in NFR tie-down

Dec. 13—LAS VEGAS, Nevada — Shad Mayfield's dream of a second world championship in three years fell short in last week's National Finals Rodeo.

Mayfield, a tie-down roper from Clovis, finished second in the final world standings to Texas' Caleb Smidt, who has now won four world titles. Smidt earned $374,736 for the season to Mayfield's $269,936.

Smidt won two of the 10-round NFR finals but also placed in the money eight times. Mayfield won one NFR round, tying a Thomas & Mack Arena record, but placed in the money just three times.

Mayfield went into last week's event in first place. Following Saturday's final round, he has earned $794,146 in four professional seasons.

He finished 12th in the world standings in 2019 before winning the title in 2020. Mayfield was seventh in 2021.

He also won the 2018 National High School Rodeo Association championship in tie-down roping.
