Update: Clovis Unified lifts lockdowns at 2 schools. Fresno police say it was ‘prank’ call

Clovis West High School was locked down Monday morning in a repeat of what happened last week, when police said a phone call threatening violence was a prank.

A caller said they were on the way to the school to shoot students around 9:30 a.m. Monday, sending officers to the campus, Fresno officer Felipe Uribe said.

There was no shooting and the threat was not credible, he said. Police were sweeping the Fresno campus as a precaution.

Said Lt. Bill Dooley said in an email update: “We ask for our community’s patience as these types of events do take time to resolve, and ensuring the safety of our children is our number one priority.”

In an email to parents, Clovis Unified School District said nearby Fort Washington Elementary across the street from Clovis West was also locked down.

Clovis Unified School District said both schools were “moved off lockdown” at about 10:15 a.m.

“The campuses will operate in shelter in place status for a short time before returning to normal school operations given the assurance that campuses are secure,” the district said in an email.

“Our safety protocols are being followed and students are indoors to ensure their safety until the conclusion of the investigation,” the email said. “Parents are being informed using our auto notification system that allows messages to go out within minutes.”

Both Clovis West and Fort Washington had resumed normal operations as of 10:34 a.m., the district said in an emailed update.

A similar incident happened after lunch Friday.

After last week’s threat, some students were escorted to buses before students with other transportation were allowed to leave. The school district emailed parents that officers were “investigating a threat to the safety of our campus.”

The message said that the school was secure.

Prank call at Clovis West

Dooley said Friday the incident began after a 911 call from a male who said “he was heading to the school to commit a shooting.”

“Although this appears to be a crank/spoof call at this time,” Dooley said last week, “we are handling this event through our normal protocols.”

Officers worked with school staff to make sure the campus was safe.

Police launched a investigation into the caller, though the department expressed some challenges in trying to figure out where the call came from and who made it.
