Clyde Fair returns with a slate of favorite events

CLYDE – The Clyde Fair kicks off Friday with a new ride company, D and R Shows, but otherwise many longtime favorite activities and foods will be featured through Sunday, Sept. 17 downtown near the municipal building.

Linda Black, spokeswoman for the Clyde Fair Committee, said fans can expect to see live entertainment, the annual queen’s contest, Alexa Brown Memorial 5K Run, children’s activities, Fair Baby Contest, car show and the Go Kart Grand Prix.

Queen’s Contest kicks off festival

The Queen’s Contest starts the weekend festival with a new queen being crowned on the main stage at 5 p.m. Friday on Main Street. The cutoff for contest applications is Sept. 12, according to contest co-chairwoman Michelle Cutshall.  She said she already had five contestants over the weekend, but she expected more applications to be submitted for Queen (grades ninth through twelfth) and Junior Queen (grades sixth to eighth).

The 2022 Clyde Fair Queen Rae Anne Kehres, a Clyde High School and Vanguard Career Center student, will turn over her crown at the Friday night contest. Cutshall said the outgoing queen has been busy visiting other events in Ohio and local businesses and posting her visits to Facebook.

“We do like our queens to be seen around town,” Cutshall said.

Live entertainment all three nights

Besides the Queen’s Contest on Friday, the Main Stage entertainment will be “Stranger than Fiction” at 8 p.m.

Other entertainment over the weekend will include “Touch” at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, and Karaoke with TAZE at 7:30 p.m. Sunday.

Saturday at the fair

Three events will have downtown Clyde buzzing on Saturday morning.

Alexa Brown Memorial 5K

The 14th Annual Alexa Brown Memorial 5K already has more than 250 people registered. Registration may be done from 7:15 to 8 a.m. Saturday, or to register in advance or find a pledge sheet go to runtorememberalexa.com. The event kicks off at 8 a.m. Saturday on Buckeye Street. There is a run for children, which is followed by the major 5K on the streets of Clyde. Wendy Brown, an event organizer, said that so far 300 people have registered for the Saturday morning run.

Baby Contest

Then across the fair in the tent by the municipal building is the annual Clyde Fair Baby Contest for babies ages newborn to 30 months. The contest begins at 9 a.m.

Babies must be registered by 4 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 13) in the Clyde City Manager’s office, 222 N. Main St. Fee is $5. Babies in five age categories are judged and the top babies in each category receive trophies. The top two babies are then picked for Best Boy and Best Girl from winners of all categories. The top babies are invited to walk in the Grand Parade.

Grand Parade

The Grand Parade will be at 1 p.m. and start on Vine Street, travel to North Main Street, travel south through the fair area and continue to Clyde Elementary School. For information on the parade contact coordinator Linda Hall, 419-547-7431 or visit clydefair.com.

Other Saturday activities include a kids tent, clown Sillie Tillie, Magic Nate, COSI, and Power Wheels Demo Derby which is 2 to 4 p.m. east of the North Coast Inland Bike Trail in the grass. Children and parents may bring their own power wheels or some will be available.

Sunday includes Go-Kart Grand Prix, car show

The 31st Go-Kart Grand Prix starts the day with 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. registration, practice at 11 a.m. and the race heats starting at 1 p.m. The race is a half-mile on city streets in downtown Clyde. For more information visit the Clyde Go-Kart Grand Prix Facebook page.

On the other end of the fair is a car show from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Other Sunday activities include a worship service with Clyde Baptist Church in the tent at 10 a.m. and Sillie Tillie the clown, 1 to 4 p.m.

The Clyde FFA will host the children’s tractor pull on the main stage at 2 p.m. Registration begins at 1 p.m.
