1 fatally shot following car break-ins in hotel parking lot, CMPD says

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting in southwest Charlotte.

Just before 4:15 a.m. Monday, police were called for a shooting to the parking lot of WaterWalk Charlotte, a three-star hotel on West Arrowood Road.

At the scene, they found Travoscia Brown dead from several gunshot wounds.

A preliminary investigation revealed that the victim had been breaking into vehicles in the parking lot. A confrontation ensued and the victim was fatally shot, according to police.

Channel 9′s Almiya White spoke with residents in the area who said the shooting did not come as a surprise.

“She just told me that there was another shooting. And I was like another one?” one woman said.

The woman, who did not want to be identified, said she lives off West Arrowood Road and feels the area is facing major issues.

“The break-ins are pretty predominant over here lately, especially in the last couple of months. The violence just seems to keep ... the break-ins and the violence seems to keep increasing,” the woman said.

She said her neighbors have been calling for more security.

“Maybe a security patrol car riding through. Maybe that’ll show that you know there’s someone watching people break into places that they know nobody’s watching,” the woman explained.

Robyn Lake Hamilton, with the Urban League of Central Carolina, said she is pushing for an end to the violence.

“The first thing I thought of was that someone’s mama is in bed right now and is going to wake up to the worst news she could ever imagine, at the worst time of the year,” Hamilton said. “We need a whole community. We need everyone involved to figure out what we can do to reduce the violent crimes in our neighborhoods.”

According to Crime Mapping, this is the third break-in at the WaterWalk Charlotte this month.

The hotel’s general manager shared a statement with Channel 9, saying he could not comment further as the investigation is still active.

“The safety and security of our guests, residents and team members is our top priority, and we are incredibly saddened by the incident that took place in our parking lot overnight,” the statement reads. “This is an active police investigation and as such, we will not be sharing any specific details at this time. Questions should be referred to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department at 704-336-7600.”

John Joseph was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.
