Friends and family say final goodbyes to former CMPD Officer Angela Starnes
Friends and family of former CMPD Officer Angela Starnes said their final goodbyes on Saturday at a memorial service in Belmont.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Officer Angela Starnes passed away unexpectedly on May 16 at her home, the department announced in a news release. She was 48.
Chief Johnny Jennings said Starnes was part of CMPD’s homicide unit.
“Anyone who knew her or worked with her knows her kindness and good nature will be missed dearly,” he said.

Jennings authorized the wearing of mourning bands to honor Starnes’ service until the morning after her funeral.
“Please keep Ofc. Starnes’ family in your thoughts and prayers as they navigate through this difficult time,” Jennings asked.
The memorial was held at Belmont Abbey Cathedral.
Early life
Starnes was born in Rock Hill, her obituary stated.
She was raised in Gaston County and graduated from Ashbrook High School in 1991. She attended Gaston College and Belmont Abbey College.
Starnes earned a degree in Criminal Justice Administration from Columbia Southern University with a 4.0 GPA.
Law enforcement career
She was sworn in as an officer in 2003 and started at the Belmont Abbey College Police Department.
Starnes later served with Belmont’s police department and the Charlotte Area Transit System.
She joined CMPD in 2012 and became a a detective in the Homicide Unit in June 2019.
Services
The memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on May 28 at Belmont Abbey Cathedral in Belmont.
Family will receive friends between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on May 27 at the South Chapel of Greene Funeral Service in Gastonia.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the National Alliance for Grieving Children - kindermourn.org.
