CMS student injured by hit-and-run driver while boarding Carmel Middle School bus
A Carmel Middle School student crossing a street on Thursday morning was struck by a stolen car that fled the scene, according to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
In a note to families, Principal Andre Plaisance said a vehicle hit the Carmel Middle student while they were crossing the street to board school bus No. 1627. The incident happened around 9 a.m., and the student was transported to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Stop arms of the bus were not in operation, according to an update CMPD posted on the social media platform X, which was formerly known as Twitter.
CMPD said a large, white SUV traveling “at a high rate of speed” struck the student. The SUV was determined stolen and has been recovered, police say. The suspect driver is still at large.
Plaisance said 48 other students were on the bus at the time of the incident. Another school bus arrived on scene to transport the students to school.
“We recognize the impact this incident may have on our students who were present, as well as our entire school community,” Plaisance wrote. “Counseling services are available to all students and staff who are in need of assistance.”
CMPD is investigating the hit-and-run that happened on Arborgate Drive near East Arrowood Road. Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call 911 or Crime Stoppers at (704) 334-1600.
