CMU Football lose HEARTBREAKER to BHSU in final minute

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KREX) — The Colorado Mesa football team suffered a last minute heartbreaker Black Hills State in their second RMAC matchup of the season.

The Mavericks struck first with an 84 yard bomb of a pass from Gavin Herberg to Keenan Brown in the first quarter. The game would go back and forth until the fourth quarter when a 30 yard touchdown grab from Trevin Edwards gave the Mavs a narrow 20-19 lead. Black Hills State proceeded with a methodical drive down the field resulting in a 36 yard field goal attempted that BHSU’s Coleman Chapman kicked perfectly down the middle to give the Yellowjackets a 22-19 lead with 4:04 left to go in the game.

It was CMU’s turn for a methodical drive where they too would attempt a 36 yard field goal. Mavs’ kicker Henry Katleman also put the ball straight through the uprights and CMU led 23-22 with 38 seconds left in the 4th.

Black Hills State was not going to lay down and die though. They ran the ball right over the Mavericks to the CMU 40 yard line, where they would have one shot to win the game on a 50 yard field goal attempt. With all the weight on his back, BHSU’s Coleman Chapman booted the ball right between the posts and Black Hills State spoiled the CMU’s fun with a 25-23 victory.
