CNN analyst says GOP impeachment inquiry could ‘juice’ Biden’s 2024 run

CNN’s political director David Chalian said Monday a GOP impeachment inquiry into President Biden could “juice” Biden’s run for reelection in 2024.

“If one of the big potential vulnerabilities of a Biden reelection effort is an enthusiasm problem, we’re seeing that in small donors,” Chalian said on CNN’s “Inside Politics.” “If you want to know how to juice enthusiasm on the Democratic side? Launch an impeachment inquiry and launch impeachment, and watch what that will do to help rally Democrats to Biden’s cause.”

Chalian pointed to the first impeachment of former President Trump in 2019, where some Republicans rallied around the former president’s cause.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) has signaled in recent weeks the House Republican-led investigations of Biden and his family’s foreign business activities could lead to an official impeachment inquiry this fall when the House reconvenes.

McCarthy said Sunday an impeachment inquiry is a “natural step forward,” claiming the House GOP investigations have uncovered foreign dealings involving Biden’s family while he was vice president.

House Republicans have in recent months embarked on a widespread investigation of Hunter Biden, President Biden’s son, during his time on the board of a Ukrainian energy company while his father was vice president.

Earlier this month, the House Oversight panel showcased testimony from Hunter Biden associate Devon Archer, who alleged Hunter put his father on speakerphone multiple times while in front of foreign business associates. House Republicans, including McCarthy, have claimed Archer’s testimony demonstrates Biden lied when he claimed he never spoke with his son about business.

The House Oversight, Judiciary and Ways and Means committees have also compiled a paper trail of bank transactions and showcased whistleblowers who claimed the Department of Justice slow-walked the tax crimes investigation into Hunter Biden, who now faces a special counsel investigation after his plea deal fell apart.

While Republicans have not shown Biden directly financially benefited from any of his family’s business activities, a recent Oversight GOP staff memo argued they do not need to show direct payments to the president in order to show corruption.
