CNN debate with Sanders, Biden in Phoenix won’t have audience as coronavirus spreads

The Democratic presidential candidate debate this month in Arizona will not include a live audience amid the coronavirus outbreak, CNN announced on Tuesday.

The March 15 debate in Phoenix will be the first head-to-head matchup between Sen. Bernie Sanders and former Vice President and Sen. Joe Biden.

In addition to no live audience, CNN is eliminating the press filing center and spin room.

“CNN’s top priority is the safety of our employees and community members,” the news company said. “This extends to guests planning to attend or cover our debate on March 15.”

The decision came at the request of the campaigns and an “abundance of caution,” CNN officials said.

Democratic National Committee officials said local health officials and Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego advised the debate could go on as planned.

“Nevertheless, our number one priority has and will continue to be the safety of our staff, campaigns, Arizonians and all those involved in the debate,” DNC Communications Director Xochitl Hinojosa said in a statement.

The debate is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET Sunday.
