CNN's Van Jones praises Donald Trump over prison reform: 'You gotta give him some credit'

On Wednesday’s CNN Tonight With Don Lemon, frequent contributor Van Jones had some positive things to say about Donald Trump for throwing support behind a new prison reform bill.

“President Trump said, ‘Listen, if this is going to make the streets safer, if it’s going to give people a fairer chance, some of these forgotten men and women… let’s do something,’” Jones said. “I think, you gotta give him some credit.”

But there’s a pretty solid reason Jones, who often criticizes the president on the network, feels it’s necessary to give credit where it’s due.

“When Obama was in office, no matter what he did, the right wing just kicked his butt. I mean, he did stuff that the conservatives had been begging him to do and then they kicked his butt,” Jones said. “I say the 99 times I don’t agree with the president, I’m going to give him hell. But on this one, I’ll give him a salute and applause.”

Jones, a former Obama-era official who has worked closely with Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, on the bill, says he doesn’t yet fully trust the president, but in this matter he does.

“Do I believe that this president will sign a bill that law enforcement says will make the streets safer, and that by the way, civil rights groups like? I trust that he will sign that bill,” Jones said. “I think that we should actually be happy that there’s something that he might actually do that we would celebrate.”
