When James Coley came from Texas A&M to South Carolina to be the Gamecocks’ new receivers coach, he brought his little black book with him One page in that book is dedicated to speedy wide receiver Phillip Wright of Destrehan, Louisiana.

The flash on the track is also a highly regarded receiver, one Coley was recruiting for the Aggies before shifting to the Gamecocks.

“When he got to South Carolina, he wanted to introduce my name to them,” Wright said. “He showed the coaches my film and they loved it to. He just wants to try to bring the talent to South Carolina. I’m starting to learn more things about them. They obviously want me there, so I have to do my research, too. Recently they’ve been recruiting me hard due to Coach Coley.”

Wright (6-1, 180) is involved with his indoor track season right now, so the earliest he could visit USC would be March. He plans to make that visit and also one during the upcoming football season He also wants to visit Michigan, LSU, Texas A&M and Miami.

Wright also has offers from Baylor, Penn State, Nebraska, Georgia Tech, Arkansas and Ole Miss.

“The two top right now are Michigan and South Carolina,” Wright said. “Those are standing out to me with the coaches hitting me up and showing that they are interested in me as well. They obviously like my speed. They like that I can catch the ball and block, too. I’m not a selfish player. I just ball out and do my thing on the field.”

Wright has never visited South Carolina, but he said he does have some relatives who live in the state.

One thing he does know about the Gamecocks is the presence of Nyck Harbor, and he said he’d love to challenge him in the 100 meters. Wright has run a 10.59 in the 100 meters. He has also clocked 21.41 in the 200 meters.
