Coachella Valley Firebirds score 5-2 road win over San Diego Gulls
The Coachella Valley Firebirds continued their dominance of the San Diego Gulls with a 5-2 road victory Friday.
The Firebirds fell behind in the first period but again used a three-goal burst in the second period on the way to the team’s second road victory in three days.
In the game in San Diego, the Firebirds improved to six wins against just one loss against the Gulls this season. The Gulls jumped to a quick start, having a goal wiped out in the first minute of the game but then scoring just three minutes later for a 1-0 lead.

But Firebirds goalie Chris Gibson didn’t allow another goal until the final 90 seconds of the game despite facing 28 shots in the game. That allowed the Firebirds to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the first period on a goal by John Hayden, his 15th of the year, and by Cameron Hughes, his seventh of the year.
Big second period
In the second period, the Firebirds move ahead 3-1 on Tye Kartye’s 14th goal, then 4-1 on Jimmy Schuldt’s sixth goal of the year, on a power play. Hughes assisted on both goals.
Austin Poganski’s unassisted goal at the 12:17 mark of the second period closed out the scoring for the Firebirds.
The win improves the Firebirds’ record to 33-9-4-1 for 72 points. They are in second place in the Pacific Division, three points behind Calgary.
Earlier in the day, the Firebirds’ parent club, the Seattle Kraken, announced they were reassigning goalie Christ Driedger to the Firebirds. Driedger was not on the active roster for the Firebirds on Friday.
