Coachella Valley, Yucca Valley and Indio headline 2022 All-DVL football selections
Coachella Valley, Yucca Valley and Indio high schools dominated the Desert Valley League on the football field this season, and now it’s award season. So, it’s no surprise that the trio of schools collected the most postseason hardware within the annual DVL football awards, which we announced Wednesday.
Coachella Valley’s dynamic sophomore running back Aaron Ramirez was recognized by league coaches as the league’s Most Valuable Player. Ramirez led the valley with 1,873 and 30 touchdowns for the DVL champions, despite missing two games with a sprained ankle. The Arabs, who averaged 42.2 points per game before the injury, were never quite the same once Ramirez went out, and even after he returned and was severely limited in a playoff loss.
Ramirez set all kinds of records at the school this season, and his total yardage, touchdowns and 12-yard-per-carry average were the best in a single season at Coachella Valley High in at least 25 years.
DVL coaches named Yucca Valley’s sophomore quarterback Michael Ramos, Jr. as the league’s offensive player of the year. Even with the Trojans’ regular season finale being canceled, Ramos still ended the season with a valley-leading 2,282 yards and 34 touchdown passes, with just three interceptions. He added 317 yards and eight additional scores on the ground for the 7-3 Trojans.
Another underclassman, Yucca Valley’s Javin Hudson, was named the DVL defensive player of the year. Hudson recorded 76 tackles, intercepted five passes, recovered two fumbles, and scored two defensive touchdowns while catching 15 touchdown passes on offense.
Indio’s Christian Orozco, who played all over the field on defense for an Indio team that recorded a valley-best five shutouts and allowed just 130 points in 11 games this season, was named co-utility player of the year along with Coachella Valley’s J.J. Miranda. Playing defensive back and receiver, Miranda led the valley with six interceptions for a defense that recorded four shutouts.
A coach of the year was not selected this season.
