Coaching Awards: Watertown's Weber to receive NHSACA honor along with De Smet, Castlewood natives

SIOUX FALLS — Bill Weber of Watertown, De Smet native Bill Martens and Castlewood native Jim Dorman are among a group of South Dakotans chosen to receive awards from the National High School Athletic Coaches Association.

Weber and Martens, who coaches at Aberdeen Central, are among the state's 2022 NHSACA Coach of the Year finalist — Weber as an assistant for boys' sports and Martens for girls' cross country.

Other Coach of the Year finalists from South Dakota include Misty Larson of Chester Area, boys’ track and field; Paul Hendry of Rapid City, girls' track & field; Kurt Schultz of Baltic, boys' cross country; Jeff Halseth of Sioux Falls Lincoln, golf; Pat Moller of Mitchell, tennis; Maridee Dossett of Madison, gymnastics; Ryan Beier of Sioux Falls, soccer; Randy Marso of Brandon Valley, athletic director; and Scott Embry of Sioux Falls Lincoln, assistant coach in girls’ sports.

To be considered for this award a nominee has been determined to have outstanding coaching longevity and win-loss record, championship years, awards received and service to the coaching profession and to the athletes of South Dakota.

All finalists will be honored at the National Awards Banquet to be held on Wednesday, June 22 during the NHSACA 57th annual conference at the Prairie Meadows Hotel in Altoona, Iowa. The annual event is attended by athletic directors and coaches in 19 sports from throughout the United States.

Dorman, now of Sioux Falls, and David Dolan of Rapid City will be inducted into the NHSACA National Hall of Fame on June 21st during the national convention. This year's induction class 38 coaches from 25 states across the nation.

Dorman and Dolan were selected for the honor by the South Dakota High School Coaches Association. The selections based on longevity, service to high school athletics, honors and other specific state criteria.

The NHSACA is the oldest coach’s association in the nation formed by coaches, for coaches, and has honored coaches from across the nation with induction into the NHSACA National Hall of Fame since 1996.
