No matter the level, winning games on the road is hard.

And in the sport of baseball, no field is the same. Some field have a specific mark of what a home run is and others have no fence at all. Some schools have turf, while others may have a bumpy field.

On the South Shore, some schools more along the water may be colder with more wind. For outfielders catching pop-fly’s the game can get tricky. And some teams just have a hard time beating town rivals. There’s a ton of reasons that can factor into a road game.

Nonetheless, head coaches on some of the best baseball programs in the are were asked what's the toughest place to get a road win. Here are their answer.

Plymouth North

“Toughest for me has always been Plymouth North,” said Hingham coach Frank Niles. “The combination of they’re a good team (and) it's a little bit of a ride. Difficult to get out of school, get out the parking lot, and get to Plymouth North. You go on a Friday night it’s hard to get there on time. Once you get there, they’re a good team historically. The field has a couple hard spots. Look into the sun right side it’s hard to see the ball. Years ago it’s freezing cold, because they’re near the water.”

Norwood

“Norwood High School,” said Braintree High coach Bill O’Connell. “It’s got such great history going back to the 70s and 80s. Lot of hotly contested games there and mystique in that program. Whenever I take my teams there, we play them from that past experience I had as a kid. (I) hope to educate the kids on the rivalry they had in the 70s and 80s.”

Braintree

“Walpole and Braintree are two teams that are extremely well coached always ready to go,” said Milton coach Brendan Morrissey. “Both programs are rich in baseball history…. From the days of Coach (Don) Fredericks (Braintree) and Coach (William) Tompkins (Walpole), now to Coach O’Connell and Coach (Chris) Costello there is so much success.  There is no easy day in Bay State League and programs like those two are the reason why.”

Middleboro

“I don’t know why but we always struggle in Middleboro,”said Abington coach Steve Perakslis. “It does have a sun field in center field, which is odd. Most sun fields are right field. Tough to get used to if you’re only playing there once a year."

Hingham and Silver Lake

“Hingham and SL for us, because both teams give us fits and are so well coached,” said Plymouth North coach Dwayne Follette. “You have to play solid, clean baseball to win!”
