(FOX40.COM) — An undetermined amount of coal spilled into the Middle Fork of the Feather River after 14 train cars derailed in Plumas County on Sunday, according to the Office of Spill Prevention and Response (OSPR).

On Monday morning, the OSPR provided an update to the potential impact the spill will have on the water way and surrounding environment.

While in the short term coal is not expected to have significant aquatic toxicity impacts, it can potentially have smothering effects on organisms in the river. Cleanup operations continue today and biologists are assessing potential ecological impacts and implementing impact avoidance and minimization measures as part of the response.
