Coast Guard Personnel Wade Through Chest-High Water as Typhoon Rai Slams Philippines

People waded through chest-high water as the coast guard rescued residents from floodwater in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines, on December 16, as Typhoon Rai battered parts of the country.

Footage released by the Philippine Coast Guard shows the rescue, during which 200 people were evacuated from Barangay 26 in the city after a rapid rise in floodwaters, the coast guard said.

On December 17, the national disaster management agency reported at least one person had been killed due to the typhoon.

At 4 am Wednesday, the centre of the typhoon was 75 kilometers (46.6 miles) southwest of Iloilo City, with maximum sustained wind speeds of 155 km/h (96 m/ph) near the center, the agency said. Credit: Philippine Coast Guard via Storyful
