Coast Guard Rescues Trapped Sailors, Examines Hull of Capsized Cargo Ship in Georgia Port

US Coast Guard crews rescued 20 of the 24 sailors trapped in the overturned Golden Ray near St Simon’s Sound in Brunswick, Georgia, on September 8, and examined the hull of the vessel to determine how to rescue the remaining four the following day.

This footage shows an overhead view of the Golden Ray, the evening rescue of the 20 crew members, as well as Coast Guard and salvage personnel assessing the ship’s hull.

According to a Coast Guard press release, the 656-foot Golden Ray – a vehicle carrier – listed, capsized, and experienced a fire on board on September 8. A number of crews mobilized to save those on board the vessel, and all marine traffic into the port of Brunswick was halted in the aftermath of the incident, The Maritime Executive reported.
