Coast Guard Surveys Eruption at Mauna Loa in Hawaii

Lava continued to flow from Hawaii’s Mauna Loa volcano on Monday, November 28, after it began erupting for the first time in nearly 40 years late Sunday night, according to Hawaiian emergency officials.

Video posted by the US Coast Guard shows the eruption. The USGS said there was no threat to property in its evening update on Monday. “Lava flows from the two higher fissures moved downslope but stalled about 11 miles from Saddle Road,” they said.

The National Weather Service canceled an ash advisory on Monday, but warned people that low air quality would persist. Credit: US Coast Guard Hawaii Pacific via Storyful
