A Coastal Carolina University quarterback is arrested on drug, weapons charges

A quarterback for Coastal Carolina’s football team faces drugs and weapons charges after being arrested last week, according to online booking records.

Dontrell Jackson, 19, was arrested Wednesday by Coastal Carolina Police Department and released Friday on a $5,115 bond.

He is listed on CCU’s football roster for 2022 as a quarterback, the university’s athletic department’s website states.

Jackson has been suspended indefinitely from the football team, according to a statement provided Monday by Jerry Rashid, a university spokesman.

Student conduct cases are handled through the school’s student conduct process, the statement reads.

The freshman has been charged with carrying or displaying firearms, illegally selling or delivery of pistol and simple possession of marijuana, booking records show.

He came to Coastal from Marist High School in Harvey, Illinois, as a quarterback.

Jackson led his school to the 2021 Illinois High School Football Class 8A state championship semifinals, according to his athlete profile on the school’s sports page.

He was rated a three-star recruit as a dual-threat quarterback and rated as high as the 13th-best quarterback prospect in the Class of 2022 by Rivals, a website focused on college football and basketball recruiting.

It is not clear if Jackson played during the 2022 season.
