Coastal Volusia County residents urged to finish storm preps Monday

Volusia County officials are urging coastal residents to finish their storm preparations ahead of Subtropical Storm Nicole by the end of the day Monday.

Officials said there are around two dozen structures in the county that could be in jeopardy due to preexisting erosion from Hurricane Ian.

“Because the storm is in the early stage of development, there’s a great deal of uncertainty about its trajectory and intensity,” said Volusia County Emergency Director Jim Judge. “But we need to take this storm very seriously because it could cause more coastal erosion, which could be devastating to our beachfront properties impacted by Hurricane Ian. We’re also looking at rainfall amounts anywhere from 4 to 8 inches through Friday that could cause flooding, along with tropical storm force winds that could cause widespread power outages.”

The county is already providing sandbags to residents in the parking lot of the Volusia County Correctional Facility, 1354 Indian Lake Road, Daytona Beach. The sandbags are available from noon to 4 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7, and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 8, through Wednesday, Nov. 9.

County officials are also advising residents to take precautionary measures, including:

  • Ensuring enough food and water are available for all household members.

  • Removing debris, cleaning gutters and securing loose items, such as yard and patio furniture.

  • Making sure flashlights are still working and ample batteries are available.

Officials said coastal residents should consider moving to a safer location as soon as possible. Residents and visitors are also urged to stay off the beach until further notice due to the dangers from wind, high surf and damaged beach structures.

County officials said beachside showers and bathrooms will be closed, and trashcans and portable toilets have been removed.
