Jun. 1—Cobb resident Arian T. Moore recently published "Juneteenth Jellybean," a picture book which conveys the history of Juneteenth to young children and features a foreword by Opal Lee, the "Grandmother of Juneteenth," according to a news release.

Juneteenth, abbreviated from "June Nineteenth," became a federal holiday last year. The holiday honors the day in 1865 when federal troops informed Texan slaves of their freedom. The children's book by Moore uses illustrations and a storyline to teach young readers about the significance of Juneteenth.

"I believe Juneteenth is an opportunity to teach history," Moore said in a statement. "Studies show that early childhood education lays the foundation for a life of learning. Consequently, I wanted to write a story that preschool and kindergarten-aged children could learn from and enjoy."

As well as a story of Juneteenth, the book includes a foreword by Lee, a coloring page and affirmations to encourage children, according to the news release.

In her foreword, Lee writes, "It's never too early to teach our children about freedom. 'Juneteenth Jellybean' is an inspiring, neat little book to introduce little ones to the history and celebration of Juneteenth."
