Secret Invasion spoilers follow.

Secret Invasion star Cobie Smulders has opened up about a possible multiverse return to the MCU after her character's shock death in the show's season premiere.

Smulders' Maria Hill was shot dead in the opening episode of Secret Invasion by Kingsley Ben-Adir's shapeshifting Skrull villain Gravik, who was posing as Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury.

However, no one is ever really dead in the MCU now that the multiverse has been opened up. Smulders discussed a possible return to the character in a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter.

"That’s sort of for them to decide. I will always answer the call, but I have no idea what they have planned for future productions. But I guess anything’s possible in the multiverse," Smulders said.

The death set the tone for the opening episode of Secret Invasion and certainly came as a shock to fans, as no one expected this twist.

Smulders herself said that she was surprised the death wasn't leaked.

"There were a lot of people around, so I’m surprised that there wasn’t an image that got leaked. I guess that’s the respect that Marvel has earned over the last decade, which is like, 'Don’t spoil it for people.' And nobody did, thankfully," Smulders said.

Smulders first played Hill in The Avengers and has appeared in eight MCU projects since. She will reportedly make her final appearance (for now) as the character in this year's movie, The Marvels.

That movie will be released in November, after its debut was recently pushed back four months. However, the tantalising trailer has been released and it's been confirmed that Zawe Ashton will be appearing in the gender-swapped role of Kree villain Dar-Benn.

Secret Invasion is available to watch on Disney+, with new episodes dropping weekly.
