Cobras keep on winning

Feb. 9—SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute's basketball team defeated Spartanburg Methodist 79-70 on Wednesday night in Region 10 Division 1 action.

Toyaz Solomon and R.J. Black paced the Cobras (19-2, 7-0) with 14 points apiece. Jalen Miller added 12, Pharrell Boyogueno hit 11 and Brandon Morgan scored 10.

Black's scoring all came in the first half, when Caldwell held a 40-33 advantage.

The Cobras opened the evening on an 8-0 run. The Pioneers (16-8, 4-3) rallied ahead 23-21.

Black's 3-pointer at the 8:19 mark propelled Caldwell ahead for good.

Spartanburg pulled within a point at 50-49. The Cobras then pushed their cushion to 71-60 with 9:09 remaining, going on to sweep the regular-season series.

Caldwell's Caleb Mauldin scored nine points. Solomon hauled in eight rebounds, while Boyogueno had seven boards and three assists and Miller drained a pair of 3-pointers.

The Cobras were 16 of 22 on free throws and shot 50% from fhe floor.

Spartanburg got 12 points (three treys), six assists and three steals from Major Freeman. Jayden Byrd and Harold Johnson Jr. hit 11 points apiece, while Daniel Mayfield and Patrick Iriel scored 10 each.

The Pioneers were 15 of 18 at the foul line and hit 43.1% from the field.

Caldwell closed its home schedule on Saturday with Denmark Tech. The Cobras shoot for their first undefeated home slate in modern history, with tip-off at 2.

The Cobras have already wrapped up the NCJCAA league's regular-season championship.
