Cobras sweep Cleveland

Apr. 27—Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute swept a Friday softball doubleheader against Cleveland County.

In Game 1, Brianna Lewis hit a home run, and Jada Wilson struck out nine as the Cobras took a 6-3 win over the Yetis. Lewis finished with two runs batted in, while Wilson, Jenna Davis, Ceslie James and Ashlyn Castle all had one RBI each.

In Game 2, Abby Reeves and Castle both hit triples, and Wilson homered in the Cobras' 15-7 six-inning win.

Alyssa McCrary, Juliana Aponte, James and Castle all hit doubles; Taylor Moody and Castle each had three RBI, followed by Cierra Martin and McCrary with two each. Lewis, Wilson and Castle each had one RBI.

Caldwell's record now stands at 22-12 overall and 12-4 Region 10 Division II West. The Cobras will host Florence-Darlington in a doubleheader on Tuesday starting at 2 p.m.

College Baseball

Caldwell stayed unbeaten in Region 10 Division III play with a sweep of Rockingham on Friday.

Seth Willis allowed four hits and no walks while striking out five in seven innings to get the win in Game 1 as the Cobras took an 8-0 seven-inning decision over Rockingham. Noah Love had two doubles, while John Melton and Cole Hales had one double each. Jermie Greene and Jake Ortiz had two RBI each, while Tyler Bradley, Michael Logan, Love and Melton had one RBI apiece.

The Cobras stayed hot in Game 2, winning 10-0 in five innings. Spencer Ledford got the win, pitching all five innings, allowing two hits and one walk while striking out seven.

Logan had four RBI and a double, while Tyler Bradley had three RBI and a triple. Greene also doubled for the Cobras, and Patrick Usher and Ortiz had one RBI each in the win.

Sunday's game with Rockingham was cancelled because of field conditions and will not be made up. The Cobras return to action Wednesday at Spartanburg Methodist.

Middle schools

The William Lenoir girls soccer team opened their season Wednesday at Veterans Park in Sawmills, defeating Granite Falls 6-0. Bella Hawkins led the Wildcats with three goals. Avery Harris had two goals and an assist, Lilly Jaroszewski had a goal and an assist, and Marie Claire Waechter and Bryana Giron each had an assist. Sydney Watkins had three saves in the goal for the shutout.

On Thursday, William Lenoir hosted West Alexander and won 3-1. Waechter led the Wildcats with a pair of goals. Jaroszewski had a goal and an assist, and Harris had an assist. Watkins had seven saves in goal, including a save on a penalty kick.
