HARBOR SPRINGS — The American Junior Golf Association Coca-Cola Junior Championships will return to The Highlands of Harbor Springs next week beginning on Monday, July 4.

The annual AJGA Golf tournament will again feature some of the biggest young names in the sport from across the state of Michigan, throughout the country and welcome back international players once again after the COVID pandemic tightened things up.

A qualifying round will take place on July 4, followed by three round of tournament play between Tuesday, July 5 and Thursday, July 7, with each round taking place at The Highlands’ Moor Course.

Play will cut down by 50 percent in each division following Wednesday’s round.

Last season, Cheboygan native and Michigan Mr. Golf P.J. Maybank took the overall title on the boys side with a two-hole playoff victory, though Maybank won’t return to the competition in 2022.

Maybank carded five birdies in the final round and 13 over the three days, including the final playoff No. 18 hole. It was Maybank’s sixth national junior golf win at the time.

On the girls side, Kary Hollenbaugh of New Albany, Ohio earned the overall victory. Hollenbaugh completed her first season with Ohio State University and will also not return to the field.

The top placing returnee will come as Rochester Hills’ Lorenzo Pinili, who placed fourth overall in 2021.

The locals in the field include Rachel Fay of Petoskey and Addison Balentine of Traverse City.

Spectators are welcome to attend the event and an awards ceremony will follow the final round of play, with prizes awarded to the champions and top finishers.
